The Three Hard Problems of Deliberate Lifestyle Design

This four part series will enumerate the steps and framework we’ve developed that will help you think about your life and goals in a systematic way, so you can achieve more goals, see progress and live a more deliberate and engaged life.

A deliberate lifestyle is a conscious and purposeful approach to how one chooses to live their life. It involves thoughtful decisions and intentional actions that align with one's values, goals, and priorities. Those who embrace a deliberate lifestyle seek to minimize distractions and unnecessary clutter in their lives, focusing instead on what truly matters to them. This often includes mindful choices related to career, relationships, health, and personal development, as well as a commitment to sustainability and well-being. By embracing deliberate living, individuals can find greater satisfaction, meaning, and fulfillment in their daily experiences, ultimately crafting a life that reflects their authentic selves.

In order to live a deliberate life, the activities and actions that earn your attention in a given day. You need to set goals. You need to measure these in order to see that you made some sort of progress, and continue to measure them to ensure you are adhering to your goals.

There are plenty of great goal-setting frameworks, but they mostly take it for granted that you know what’s important. I think it’s really hard to figure out what’s really important. In fact, I regularly discover that things I thought were important aren’t. And I regularly “discover” things that are really important that I was blind to before. So I cannot simply set aside some time each year to have a big think and set my goals.

The three challenges with deliberate lifestyle design are:

1. The scoping problem

         - What does a deliberate life mean to me, and where do I start?

2. Knowing what you want

        - What is actually important at a given point in your life?

3. The hard problem of getting help

        - Is getting the help we need to manage our lives a problem with the system, or our approach?

This four part series will enumerate the steps and framework we’ve developed that will help you think about your life and goals in a systematic way, so you can achieve more goals, see progress and live a more deliberate and engaged life. It will help you understand the kinds of data you need to collect, how to define your goals, and then achieve them.

We’ve developed Fulcra so that we can help you understand your life holistically and then live deliberately. Stay tuned for part 2.
